A Girls Night {Christmas Ribbon Wreath Tutorial}

A brand new week is here...
a week I happen to be very excited about!
{Breaking Dawn is Thursday at midnight...Wahooo}

I hope you all got a chance to read Jessie's guest post for me from Friday! But if you didn't, please refer to this previous post to read it. I had NO idea what she was going to write about as she hacked my blog, but her post was hysterical and it was definitely one my only of my favorite hacked guest posts.

Jessie and me had a date to an amazing Italian restaurant in Powell, called Luce, on Friday night. It did not disappoint, and of course, I love any time I get to spend with her! :) I will post those pictures and share about our time tomorrow because unfortunately I didn't get any on my iPhone. fail.

On Saturday, I took extra advantage of the fact that Billy was having a guys weekend {in Florida nonetheless} and decided to have 2 of my girlfriends over for a Pinterest inspired craft party. I decided to pick the craft this time {we are planning another one!} and let the girls know all the supplies they would need. I made baked brie, macaroni salad, and my fav black bean taquitos and the girls brought wine and other delish appetizers.

The baked brie was delicious by the way.
Possibly my new favorite appetizer to make.

We decided to make our own version of the ribbon Christmas wreaths you can find all over Pinterest. I liked the idea of getting a head start on my Christmas decor so when it's time to decorate, I will just need to hang it! Update: it's actually already hung on our door. I like it so much I couldn't help myself. ;)

...it's safe to say I'm in the Christmas spirit now!

We used this picture as our inspiration:

Christmas Wreath (Ribbon/Fabric) Tutorial:

FYI: You can find everything you need at Hobby Lobby
or your preference of a craft store.

Here's what you'll need:

-1 Grapevine Wreath
-Your choice of Christmas colored fabric {3 yards & 3 patterns seemed to be a good amount}
-Christmas ribbon {I bought 4 spools but didn't need it all}
-Hot glue gun
-Any ornaments, pinecones, letters, or decorative pieces to attach to the wreath {I used all of the above, with a wooden "K" letter for our last name}

Step 1: Since we each wanted to add wooden letters to our wreath, we bought a small can of silver spraypaint and spraypainted the letters first so they could dry while we worked on the wreaths. If you don't use any letters, skip this step. :)

Step 2: Lay out your supplies on the ground {do this craft somewhere that you don't mind the floor getting messy!} and pick out a certain pattern with your fabrics. Lindsay and Christine decided to do one type of fabric {which was a gorgeous red/green stripe}, and I was kinda all over the place and used 3 different types of fabric. We started with one fabric and used it in about 4 or 5 spaced out places around the wreath and then used the other fabrics or ribbons to go around them in a pattern.

We found that the fabric is much easier to work with than the ribbon, so we only used the ribbon as an accent.

Step 3: To attach the fabric and ribbon, you will just want to "weave" it through the wreath and tie a knot in the middle. You will get the hang of it once you do more pieces. You can kinda shape the pieces how you want them. We noticed that thicker, longer pieces of fabric looked a lot better and covered more room.

{this is Linds helping the gimp {ie: Me} with my wreath
while I'm playing photographer}

Step 4: Once the wreath is filled with your desired amount of fabric and ribbons, hot glue gun the ornaments or the letter on top of the ribbons.

...and take a break for some wine ;)

This is a {messy} picture of all 3 of our finished wreaths.
Mine is in the middle.

Didn't Lindsay {right} and Christine's {left} wreaths turn out so cute?

I loved how they only used one fabric to make it look more put together, but accented with different colors of ribbon. Since I used some pinecones, I chose not to add any other letters because I thought it may be a tad too much. I also wanted to add more green ribbon to mine because our front door is painted red!

Here is my finished wreath
hanging on our front door:

I'm extremely happy with how it turned out! In fact, I kinda love it.
I would be lying if I said I didn't get a lot of help from Lindsay when it came to the tying of the knots. I was not very good at that part. She's a good friend.

The most time consuming part of making this wreath was just the tying of the fabric and ribbons. Once you get the hang of it, everything else goes very quickly and is easy to do. I'm sure eating a ton of food beforehand and consuming multiple glasses of wine made us go a little slower than normal too. ;) You can definitely finish this project in an hour or 2! I'm thinking about making them for some family members as Christmas gifts.

What do you think of our Christmas wreaths?

Have you made a similar ribbon wreath before?

Now, hmmm...what DIY project is next on the list...
