MAKE YOUR OWN: CARAMEL APPLES

This past Friday night, we decided to try and make our own caramel apples. I am so glad we did because they were easy to do and it was fun picking out own toppings and making them ourselves at home! If you've never made any yourself before-I highly suggest it if you can do it without eating all the toppings before you put them on the apples. ;)

This is such a fun fall activity, and you can make as many as you want and supposedly they last up to two weeks. Make and eat your heart out.

Here's what you need:
-Apples (if you use local ones-they are so much sweeter)
-Sticks
-Toppings (we used: M&Ms, Reese's Pieces, Crushed Oreos, and Crushed Nuts)
-Caramel. Right now they have caramel apple dip bowls at the store that you can use and melt, or you can melt a bag of candy caramel's like we did.

How to make:
The process is pretty self-explanatory, but make sure to wash your apples and dry them off first. This will help make the caramel stick. Heat your caramel in the microwave (or stove-however you prefer) and cook at 15 second intervals making sure not to overheat. Stir frequently. Dip your apples in the caramel and use a spoon to help cover the whole apple. For the toppings, instead of rolling the apple in your desired topping bowl, we just sprinkled the toppings on the apple so it didn't create a big mess.

Voila!

*Note: You do NOT have to refrigerate the apples once you are finished.

For the most part, it looks all put together up there, right? Ha. Let's not kid ourselves.
Things did get a little messy on our first apple...

I like to call him: Leaning tower of Pieces.

If you make a caramel apple with Reese's Pieces, you have to work really quick so that they stick to the caramel and don't try and cover the whole apple like we did. Just try and get the top half. You could crush them up a bit in a food processor if you don't care that they are whole to make it a little easier.

Have you made caramel apples before?
What is your favorite topping?
-My favorite apple was the Oreo one! But for a good, classic apple that never fails I'd have to pick the nuts! You just can't go wrong there.

Come back tomorrow for somethin' real exciting. No hints. :)

PS: You can still honor a loved one that I mentioned in Monday's post and $5 will be donated to Breast Cancer awareness. I would be so greatful if you did! Read about it here. xo
