My Beauty Reg. & Tips For Glowing Skin

It's been a hot minute, or two, since I've shared
some of my favorite beauty products.
Here are 4 products that I've been using for quite some time that I love,
and also some tips on how to get glowing skin.

1. ProActiv: I've never had acne, but my cousin got me hooked on this. It keeps my face clear and I rarely ever get pimples when I use this daily.
2. Jergens Natural Glow Face Moisturizer (with SPF): ADORE this stuff. It gives your face color, has SPF, and is a great moisturizer. I usually use a tiny bit of this and mix it with product #3. It isn't heavy and it doesn't smell bad (well, I don't think so), if you're wondering.
3. Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture: This is the best face lotion I've used. I like that it doesn't leave my skin feeling oily or heavy, and right after I put it on, my face looks so much brighter. Can't live without this stuff.
4. Olay Age Defying Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream (my fav): It is never to early to use an anti-wrinkle cream! I'm scared of wrinkles, so naturally, I am OBSESSED with this stuff. I put it on right before bed every night. Try it. Now.

*These are the ONLY products I put on my face everyday.
{linking up with Aly and Tiffanie for POTW}

I've been lucky in the fact that I never really had major skin problems (I pray I'm not jinxing myself here...) Also, when I made the switch to being a vegetarian, I've noticed my skin looks clearer and healthier. Billy has even noticed, and that my friends, makes me a happy camper. With that being said, I'm not a skin expert so I don't put much on my face typically - meaning both products and makeup. My cousin, Natasha (who is a skin nazi), once told me that you are only supposed to wash your face once a day. That it can actually be bad for your skin to wash it too much. I believe it.

I do believe your skin is a reflection of what you put in your body.
Not in all cases (I know girls that are very healthy but still have skin problems - so this is an exception), but this is true in many cases.

So, do you want glowing skin?
(I mean, who doesn't?)

Here are some tips that I've picked up along the way...
(please keep in mind I'm not an experienced derm. ;))

1. Drink water, Drink Water, Drink Water!

I keep a waterbottle at my desk everyday at work, and make sure I fill it up twice before lunch, and twice before I leave for the day. Make sure water is the #1 drink in your life. I can't tell you how important this is. I have seen my skin improve dramatically just by doing this.

2. Cut out the sugar & high-glycemic carbohydrates

This category of food includes potatoes, rice and pasta. These foods can cause blood sugar to spike and lead to dangerous chemical changes in your body. Your body needs carbohydrates, though, so get your fill from low-glycemic fruits and vegetables.

3. Never go to bed without washing off your makeup.

This is huge. I heard some crazy rumor about how much one night of sleeping in your makeup will age you. Anyone else heard this? It scared me enough to never want to sleep in make up ever again. No matter how tired, ie: tipsy, you are..FIND THE TIME to do it. Makeup will clog your pores big time!

4. Pay attention to what is causing your skin to breakout.

If you pay close attention to what you are eating, you can sometimes pin-point what is causing your breakouts. For me, I found that soy products, eggs, and sadly enough chocolate, make my face extremely unhappy. Try and stay away from these.

*I've mentioned this before, but another thing you can do to improve your skin is to drink a cup of warm, lemon water (just use 1 or 2 tbls) right when you wake up in the morning.

Well, that's a wrap with Dr. Katie today.
...Dr.? Huh? Just kidding.
What do you do to keep your skin healthy?!

*Do you notice a new blinged out header up there?
The wonderful Drew @ Coral Cafe Designs (you can find her button on my left sidebar)updated my header and gave me a new and improved button, due to a minor drama type situation with another designer (..get off your soap box, pahlease.) All I have to say is, they are both 3x better than the last, and I'm so happy with them.

I promise this is the last time I ask you to update my button
for a long time.

look how pretty she is?!

  1. I'm obsessed with your #4 as well! I will NOT go to bed with makeup on. My best friend is a cosmetologist and she said the women that come to her that have admitted to sleeping in their makeup for the past 20 years, has 2x more wrinkles!

  2. Well, Dr. Katie I just love this! My favorite ProActiv item is the mask! I almost instantly see an improvement! I'll definitely have to go out and get #3 and #4 as well! I've been using a Garnier anti-wrinkle cream at night but can't say I've seen much improvement :( No to wrinkles!!

Also, I'm gonna challenge myself to drink that much water. I, too, keep a big water bottle at my desk but now I'll try to tally the number of times I re-fill it :)

  3. So glad you posted this because I was going to purchase a new face moisturizer today and voila! you posted a great one and made me want to try it! I have to admit, I used to sleep in my make up all the time, but I have finally gotten myself into the routine of washing my face before bedtime every night. :) Go me!

  5. Great tips!! I ALWAYS take off my makeup before going to bed even after a night out. There is nothing worse than waking up with your contacts stuck to your eyeballs & your face covered in makeup. It is actually usually the first thing I do when I get home from work, amazing how much better I feel! I actually did a beauty product post this morning too with some of my current faves :)

  8. Hello, I am new to your blog and love it! I love this post for numerous reasons but my main is because I have troubles with acne & breakouts and have a hard time finding good products that do the jobs. But my main question is does the Jergens face glow feel heavy and does it have that self tanner smell? I use the Jergens body glow lotion and I like it but it has that smell and I don't care for it.

  9. Thanks for all these tips! So needed!

  10. Nicole, No..it doesn't smell bad and it's not heavy at all! I hate heavy face products so I wouldn't wear this if that was the case. I think it's less harsh than the normal Jergens lotions.

  14. good and informative post, dr katie.

i have been seeing a derm for awhile now and he has been so helpful. helping steer clear of products that clog my pores and pointing out a ton of the things you mentioned above. i wash my face with just a regular neutrogena facewash in the morning and at night (it's so hard when i'm tipsy) using my clarisonic mia. and i also use a prescribed ointment. as well as taking an antibotic every other day.

and you're right drinking water every day and not drinking sodas has help tremendously.

  16. Great idea to mix the Jergens and moisturizer together!
I bet it doesn't put too much of the color on your face if you're afraid of that too. Just enough!

Again! So happy you got a new header that you love! I designed it, but you gave the remarkable feeback ;)
    You've got a designer eye!

  17. I also swear by the neutrogena face lotion! I even have my husband hooked! I also noticed in one of your instagram pics that you use oribe hair products....I do too! I love about everything that I have from that brand!

  21. Never go to bed without washing off your makeup.
yes, yes, & more yes! someone once told me that sleeping with your makeup on can clog your pores so bad it will cause skin tags. since then? i don't care if i get home at 2 am .. i take my makeup off!

  22. I LOLed about the skin nazi comment. I stare at my skin as closely as possible for minimum of 20 minutes a day. Can we say obsessed much?!

  23. OMFG I am on your sidebar. I am so fancy that I figured out how to make a button. Aren't you proud of me?!!?!?

  24. Katie! I love it when people suggest facial products! I have been having the worst face problems lately and its so frustrating so I'm so excited to try these out and give them a whirl myself. I love that you have "rules" about drinking water before meal times, I do that too! :) Fabulous post today!

  25. I am honored of being on your sidebar, just so ya know ;) I'm going to add yours to mine once my new blog design debuts! Just you wait for it.

Also - I want to know this blog designer drama. I'm laughing because why the hell would there be drama?! And I hope you realize my request to hear said drama was dripping in sarcasam!

The one time I am outta town down south and couldn't link up to my own swap - you link up. Shoot! Do it again another time :)

I am a beauty junkie whore so I love that you showed me all your loves. Because Target will not get richer from me purchasing these products - after Lent, of course - because you know I gave up shopping and coke (liquid coke) for Lent!

WOW. Worlds longest, annoying, no good comment. Oh well!!

Xoxoxo pretty girl! HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND FRIEND!!!

  26. I used to use proactive but it bleached all of my sheets and wash clothes. Do you have this issue?? Neutrogena moisturizer is great!!!

Ohhh and I am loving the new updates!

  27. Don't forget tanning!! It will make you very wrinkly and your skin will become leather-like. Plus, it's TOTALLY not worth cancer. :) Great products!

  28. I have also read scary facts about how much forgetting to remove make-up before bed can age your skin, so wet cleansing towelettes (I'm partial to Pond's) have become my best friends on nights where I'm exhausted and want to get to bed ASAP ;)
